‘Was just everywhere’ – National media in awe of Spurs star after his latest display

The Welshman media have waxed lyrical about Ben Davies for a battling display against Poland, even though the Tottenham man’s efforts ultimately proved to be in vain.

Wales’ dream of making it to their third successive European Championship ended in tears on Tuesday as they were beaten by Poland on penalties at the Cardiff City Stadium after the two sides played out a 0-0 draw.

Davies captained the Dragons and started in a back three alongside Joe Rodon and Chris Mepham, with the latter receiving his marching orders at the dying stages of extra time.

Not only did the 30-year-old help his side keep a clean sheet, managing to shut out Poland’s talented forward line but he also stepped up first in the shootout and converted his spot-kick.

Tottenham’s Ben Davies impresses for Wales

Even though Davies will not be leading Robert Page’s men in the Euros in Germany this summer, the Welshman media sang his praises for the effort he put in and the character he showed.

Wales Online named the left-sided centre-back as their Man of the Match with a rating of 9/10 and wrote about him: “Won more than his fair share of duels and beat Lewandowski in the air a few times. Was unlucky to see a headed goal of his ruled out for offside. Was just everywhere. Netted his penalty, too.”

Y Clwb Pel-Droed gave the Spurs star 7 out of 10 for his efforts on the night and wrote: “He was solid all night at the back for Wales. And made some huge headed clearances that could have been golden opportunities for Poland otherwise.”

Joe Rodon was also praised for his resolute defending, with the two aforementioned outlets giving the on-loan Tottenham defender ratings of 8/10 and 7/10 respectively.

Both Davies and Johnson will be devastated at the loss, particularly the defender as this could well have been his last chance at a major tournament as Wales are going to find it difficult to qualify for the next World Cup.
