‘Was looked at under Paratici’ – Journalist hints Spurs could rekindle interest in Ligue 1 striker

Journalist Ben Jacobs has named Jonathan David as another striker who is on Tottenham’s radar ahead of next summer, alongside Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez and Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee.

There has been lots of speculation linking Gimenez with a move to Tottenham over recent months and although the 22-year-old looks set to stay in De Kuip this month, outlets have continued to back the Premier League side to make a move for him next summer.

This includes an update by Medio Tiempo just a few days ago which claimed that the Lilywhites look set to battle both Chelsea and West Ham United for the Mexican’s signature at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Zirkzee, who is having an outstanding campaign at Bologna, with 12 goal contributions across all competitions so far this season, has also been mooted as a target for Ange Posteocoglou’s side recently.

Last week, TuttoMercatoWeb claimed that Spurs, Aston Villa, Arsenal and AC Milan are all plotting a summer move for the Dutchman, who allegedly has a €40m (£34.2m) release clause in his contract.

Jonathan David is also being eyed by Spurs

Jacobs has now confirmed that Zirkzee and Gimenez are indeed being watched by Tottenham and the journalist also mentioned another name who is on the club’s wishlist – Jonathan David.

He explained that the Lille star, who has emerged as one of the best marksmen in Ligue 1 over the last few years, has been a long-term target for Spurs.

Jacobs told Last Word on Spurs podcast: “Zirkzee is an interesting one as we talk about the summer, there are two left-field names if we can call them that, one is Zirkzee and one if Santi Gimenez.

“Zirkzee is one to watch, Gimenez is one to watch and Jonathan David is a third name to throw into the mix because he was looked at under Paratici and Conte and we need to understand if they will return under the new recruitment team and Ange Postecoglou.”

Spurs Web Opinion

David’s stock is now perhaps not as high as it was six months ago, with the striker perhaps falling slightly short of the high standards he has set for himself since his switch to Lille in 2020.

However, that could also mean that he is not going to cost a fortune while the Canadian’s pace, technical quality and pressing will make him a good fit for Postecoglou’s system.
