‘Wasted 3 years of his life’ – Pundit blasts Tottenham star for off-field antics

Simon Jordan has taken a swipe at Dele Alli, insisting the Tottenham midfielder has delusions of grandeur and he should focus more on football than advertising clothing brands.

It seemed as though Alli was on course to save his Spurs career at the start of the season, with the midfielder starting all of the club’s first six Premier League games of the campaign.

However, the 25-year-old fell out of favour in the latter weeks of Nuno Espirito Santo’s reign and he has not started a single league match since Antonio Conte arrived at Spurs.

Reports indicate that the Italian has given the green light for the former MK Dons man to be moved on in January.

Jordan was adamant that no decent team would want Alli and that the Spurs man would have to settle for a move to a club like Newcastle.

There is this commonly held idea about Dele in the media that the reason his form has fallen off a cliff over recent years is that he believed in his own hype and stopped doing things that brought him success.

While there could be an element of truth to that, I think the more important reason for Alli’s struggles are the tactical changes at Spurs since Pochettino’s departure and the midfielder’s inflexibility in adapting to the requirements of the system.

When Dele was a potent threat, he was playing in a high-pressing team, which dominated possession due to Dembele’s insane press resistance and had someone like Eriksen delivering quality balls into the box on a regular basis.

However, he is never going to be a good fit for a counter-attacking team, which we have been for the last two and half seasons and continue to be under Conte. That is why I am not sure if a move to a club like Newcastle will suit him.
