Journalist Dean Jones has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur could sign another centre-back before the transfer window closes if Japhet Tanganga departs the club.

Spurs have strengthened in central defence with the addition of Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona this summer while Joe Rodon has departed the club.

That leaves Conte with six different options for his back three but it remains to be seen whether Tanganga will still be a Tottenham player by the end of the transfer window.

Gianluca Di Marzio claimed on Friday that AC Milan have restarted talks with Tottenham over a potential deal for Tanganga, with the Rossoneri said to be keen on bolstering their backline before the transfer window closes.

The journalist added that while the Serie A club want to sign the Spurs academy graduate on loan with an option to buy, the North London club would prefer a permanent sale.

Jones believes that Tanganga’s potential departure and Cristian Romero’s injury could convince Tottenham to sign another central defender before the end of the month.

The journalist told ThisIsFutbol: “I am starting to wonder if they’ll go for a centre-back as well. If Tanganga goes particularly, I think that Spurs could go shopping again in that market.

“I’ve considered before that they might hold off until January and see whether they actually need anyone.

“But they’re getting a couple of knocks in that area and they have Lenglet not totally figuring at the moment. I do think we should watch out for another defender coming in.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt in my mind that Conte will want to bring in another centre-back if Tanganga departs but it is anybody’s guess who Spurs are likely to pursue. As things stand, I think the most likely outcome is for Tottenham to hang on to Tanganga until January and reassess the situation then.
