‘We all look up to him’ – Jordan Pickford on England captain Harry Kane

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been speaking to the press at the 2022 World Cup and opened up on the importance of Harry Kane within the Three Lions squad.

Since making his England debut in 2017, Pickford has firmly established himself as the number-one goalkeeper for the national team and now has 46 caps to his name (Transfermarkt). The World Cup in Qatar is his third major tournament with the England squad.

As one of the most experienced members of the squad, Pickford has seen many players come and go in his time with Gareth Southgate’s side. One player who isn’t going anywhere, though, is Harry Kane.

The England captain and Tottenham Hotspur star is one of, if not the most important player in the England squad. With 51 goals for England (Transfermarkt), Kane is now just two goals behind Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time top goalscorer, a record he is likely to break in Qatar.

Speaking to the press (via Sky Sports’ Football Daily) ahead of England’s next group game, Pickford was asked if Kane is irreplaceable, leading to comments on the strength of the national side and the value Kane brings to the England squad.

He said: “I think everyone can take their chance, you know when Harry [Kane] came off, Callum [Wilson] came on and played really well. He got the assist for Jack [Grealish], very unselfish and gave Jack his goal. Everyone is training really hard, everyone’s here for a reason, to play football.”

On Kane, Pickford added: “Obviously, Harry is an unbelievable player. He sets the example in the squad; he’s the leader, he’s the captain and we all look up to him. But there’s also opportunities for the lads.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Callum Wilson is a fantastic player and definitely offers England something different up top, but Harry Kane is one of the best players in the world and any side would suffer without him. His influence is clear to see, and his game is about far more than just goals, as we saw against Iran.
