‘We can work for many years together’ – Conte on building something at Spurs

In what will come as music to the ears of Spurs fans, Antonio Conte has seemingly suggested that he is prepared to build something over ‘many years’ at Tottenham to make the North London club competitive across all competitions.

There was plenty of speculation over Conte’s future at the end of last season, with reports indicating that he could depart the club (The Times).

The Italian himself refused to commit his future, even following Tottenham’s 5-0 win over Norwich in the final game of last season, which helped the club seal a return to the Champions League (Football.London).

However, Conte has certainly been backed by the Spurs hierarchy this summer, with the club bringing in six new players through the door, and doing so well before the new campaign gets underway so the new arrivals have time to bed in.

The Spurs head coach has now admitted it will not be easy to become competitive on all fronts but appeared to hint he is prepared to stay at the club long enough to achieve that goal.

Conte told Football.London: “As I’ve said before, our project, our plan is to try to become competitive, more than the past, but you know very well that in football you build something important in one day, one month, one year you have go step by step and try to increase the quality, increase the number of players in your squad.

“Don’t forget that when a team stay in the top four and play European games you need to face four competitions in the best possible way.

“To do this you need a good squad with good quality. We are trying to do this but we have just started this process. Last season I think we worked very well to reach a place in the Champions League.

“At the same time I think we exploited problems, United’s problems and in the last three games Arsenal were four points up on us and for this reason we have to continue with the club to build with the players, to continue to improve them.

“They have a lot of space for improvement. This is a young team and we can work for many years together to improve and fight with the best teams in England and in Europe.”

This is perhaps the biggest hint that Conte has given that he would be prepared to build a long-term project at Spurs, just as Jurgen Klopp has at Liverpool. However, things could change quite quickly in football and a lot will depend on what unfolds during the upcoming campaign.
