‘We cannot find solidity’ – Cristian Romero opens up on poor Spurs defence

Cristian Romero has revealed that the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Leicester City went down very badly in the Tottenham dressing room.

Leading into the game at the King Power Stadium, Spurs had won three consecutive matches across all competitions, including a 1-0 win over reigning champions Manchester City.

However, their defensive issues once again came to the fore last Saturday, with the Foxes ripping them apart across the 90 minutes.

Harry Kane remarked earlier this week that Spurs lacked fight and passion against Leicester, labelling the performance as ‘unacceptable’ (Football.London).

Romero has now stated that the players realised on the back of that loss that they had to improve in many aspects.

The centre-back told Ole: “Unfortunately, we are at a time when we cannot find solidity as a team. We have to rediscover ourselves. We have a great team, but we are missing some things.

“Lately we have had quite a few ups and downs. We had a game against City that seemed like we were fighting for the Premier League and against Leicester we had a defeat that went down very badly. We have to improve in all aspects.”

While Tottenham delivered a more solid display at the San Siro on Tuesday, they still fell to a 1-0 loss, thus leaving them with plenty of work to do in the return leg in London on March 8.

Romero admitted that the team missed the presence of Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park but insisted that the tie is far from over.

The Argentine said following the 1-0 loss at the San Siro: “Today the absences of Rodri and Pierre were felt, they are two important players for us. They are two players who always play with the heart.

“Personally, fine. Beyond the defeat, I feel good, physically good. I’m in a good moment and I’m happy where I am. We still have one game left, we decide it at home and everything is open.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The defeat against Leicester came at the worst possible time just as the players were building some confidence and momentum. I fear that the nature of that defeat would be hard to recover from and that it could be the start of the end of Conte’s time at Spurs.
