‘We don’t need’ – Chief rules his club out of January move for Spurs-linked striker

Shakhtar Donetsk director Darijo Srna has ruled the Ukrainian club out of the race for rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez has been on red hot form for River Plate so far this campaign, having found the back of the net 16 times in 17 league matches

Tottenham are one of the clubs alleged to be following the 21-year-old’s progress ahead of the January transfer window

The Lilywhites reportedly face competition from the likes of AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa for the Argentine international.

Sources from Argentina have backed Alvarez to be sold in January as River Plate might find it difficult to extend his contract, which runs out in December of 2022.

TuttoMercatoWeb claimed last week that Shakhtar had moved to the pole position in the race for the young striker, with the Ukrainian club said to be ready to bid €20m (£16.8m) for Alvarez.

However, Srna has now insisted that Shakhtar are not looking to add to their forward line in January.

When asked about the club’s alleged move for Alvarez, he told Calciomercato: “With a Fernando like this, we don’t need a striker.

“And then there are Sikan and Traore, who will be operated on and will return early next season. Alvarez will not go to Shakhtar.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Most of the speculation linking Spurs with a move for Alvarez seems to be originating from Italy. There have not been many Argentine sources that have reported Tottenham’s interest in the young striker while not a single English publication have done so either. So, I am not sure if Alvarez is on the North London club’s wishlist.
