‘We have the ambition’ – Spurs star insists top four finish is still the main aim

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has reiterated a top-four finish in the Premier League is still Tottenham’s aim this season despite the club going through an inconsistent spell of form.

Spurs have dropped back in the race for the Champions League since the turn of the year having won four of their last eight league games.

A statement appeared to have been laid when Spurs stunned leaders Manchester City with a 3-2 win, but failed to build on that display just a few days later by losing at relegation-threatened Burnley.

Spurs then bounced back with a 4-0 thrashing of Leeds over a week ago, but the club’s turbulent form of late has left them playing catch-up.

Antonio Conte’s men sit seventh-place in the table and six points off rivals Arsenal in fourth, with both sides still set to face each other in a crucial encounter in N17 later this season.

And although Tottenham are currently on the outside looking in, Hojbjerg insists finishing in the top four is still his side’s goal come the end of the season.

He told William Hill, via Daily Mail: “I can give you a big explanation or a big singalong but as long as the chances are there it’s something that you have to work to achieve. For me it’s difficult to put words into it, it’s better that the team show it by action.

“But the chances are there which means that the ambition is there. We are still trying our best for a top-four finish and as long as it’s possible, we have the ambition to do it. We are giving our best to achieve our targets and we have to fight for this.”

Tottenham have left themselves with a bit of a mountain to climb with their up and down form in the second half of the season. They can’t afford to have many more games pass them by at this stage as they need all the points they can get if a top-four finish is indeed the aim.
