‘We haven’t achieved anything’ – Postecoglou reacts to Spurs going top of the table

Ange Postecoglou has insisted that no one at Tottenham Hotspur is getting carried away by the start that they have made to the season, insisting that the team is focused on continuing to improve.

Spurs have shown a never-say-die attitude over the last few weeks, coming back from adversity and scoring some late winners.

Their fighting spirit was on show on Saturday as they ground out a 1-0 win away at Luton Town despite having to play with ten men for the entirety of the second half.

The win meant that Ange Postecoglou’s men climbed to the summit of the Premier League table, with the Lilywhites now having made their best start to a season since their famous double-winning campaign back in 1960-61 (Statman Dave).

However, the Tottenham head coach has insisted that the players are aware that it is too early to be looking at the table, remarking that the focus at the moment is on improving different aspects of their game.

Postecoglou isn’t bothered about topping the table

When asked about going top, he told Football.London: “I don’t think you read too much. They’re not silly, they know it’s only October and being top of the league now doesn’t really mean anything tangible apart from the fact that we’ve started the season well.

“We’ve played some good football and we’ve had all sort of different challenges thrown at us. We’ve been behind in games away from home, we’ve had to score last-minute winners.

“It’s not like it’s been smooth sailing. We’ve had to work awfully hard to be in the position we are and I guess from my perspective it’s great that they’re getting rewarded with results and that can only help us grow as a team.

“But it’s not like they’re sitting in there thinking we’ve achieved anything. We haven’t achieved anything, all we’ve done is lay some really good foundations.

“Our goals and ambitions lie in improvement. Can we play better, can we become a better team and if we do that then we’ll see where that takes us.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It makes no sense to look at the table until at least 15 matches have been played. While Spurs fans have plenty of reasons for optimism, it is premature to entertain any serious thoughts of a title tilt this season.
