‘We just have to win’ – Conte’s honest admission on Spurs targets this season

Antonio Conte has refused to give specifics in terms of Tottenham’s targets this season, simply insisting that the team will go into every game looking to get all three points.

Tottenham currently sit four points off West Ham in fourth place but have four games in hand over the Hammers.

A win against Southampton this evening would take the Lilywhites above both Manchester United and Arsenal in the table.

In addition, Spurs have sealed progression to the fifth round of the FA Cup where they will take on Middlesbrough for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Given Conte’s record of winning major trophies over the course of his career, Tottenham fans will believe the club have a fighting chance of qualifying for the Champions League and going all the way in the FA Cup.

However, the Italian was not willing to publicly spell out his ambitions for the season, simply insisting that it is about taking game by game.

Conte told Football.London: “Our target has to be to do the best of our possibility. If you are to ask me now our level of possibility, it is very difficult to answer this question,” he said.

“For sure we will do our best, I am sure about this. I don’t know the point we will reach to do our best but for sure we will do everything in every game to get points and try to do our best. I am sure about this.

“Then it is very difficult to talk about our target because it depends on many situations that at this moment are not in our hands.”

When it was pointed out to the Italian that Champions League qualification was in Tottenham’s hands given the games they have in hand over their direct rivals, he responded: “We just have to win!

“To win is very simple to talk about or use this word, but then you have to play and to win. We want to play every game to win, because I don’t know one team who goes out to play a game in order to lose.

“There are the opponents, the difficulty of the game. There are a lot of situations that can affect the game, but we are trying to improve, to go step by step and to try to get the best we can do in this league.”

Conte is obviously conscious about not wanting to put pressure on himself and the squad. However, his communication would be different internally and he will likely be instilling confidence in the players that they can finish in the top four and go all the way in the FA Cup.
