‘We need experience’ – Mourinho explains why new signing will be important for Spurs

Jose Mourinho believes that snapping up Joe Hart on a free-transfer was a no-brainer for Tottenham given what the goalkeeper has achieved in his career.

Hart’s arrival caught many by surprise, with the transfer moving quite swiftly after rumours of Tottenham’s interest in the former Manchester City goalkeeper first emerged.

The 33-year-old came across very well in his first interview with Spurs TV as he insisted that he is ready to help the team whether or not his name is on the team sheet.

This move represents a fresh start for the experienced shot-stopper, who has had a very difficult three years at West Ham and Burnley.

Mourinho insisted that Tottenham needed another goalkeeper after Michel Vorm departed at the end of last season following the conclusion of his contract.

Given the experience that Hart brings to the table, the Spurs boss suggested that the club could not afford to miss out on him.

When asked about Tottenham’s acquisition of Hart, Mourinho told CBS Sports (as relayed by Football.London): “Joe is a good keeper with 75 caps for England and that says everything about him.

“We know his potential, his experience and his desire to go back to…shall we say top clubs, which was a very important thing for his decision.

“We are more than happy because we are a very young squad.

“We need experience and we need this know-how of playing with big responsibilities.

“To have in the squad Joe Hart, (Hugo) Lloris (Paulo) Gazzaniga, that was really good cover for a position where sometimes it is really important to have cover.

“It happened to us last season with Hugo and a big injury and after Michel Vorm went back to Holland.

“We had to sign Joe on a free transfer.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While it is true that we need three top goalkeepers in case we have a situation like we did last year, I suspect that the main reason Hart has been bought in is for his influence off the pitch. The 33-year-old will serve as an influential voice in the dressing room and will bring a winning mentality to the squad.
