Eric Dier has lavished praise on Rodrigo Bentancur, insisting that the Uruguayan makes the Tottenham team tick.

Bentancur’s arrival from Juventus during the January transfer window did not particularly excite some within the Tottenham fan base, given that he had fallen down Massimiliano Allegri’s pecking order in the months ahead of his move.

However, the 25-year-old did not take much time to win Spurs fans over and quickly established himself as a mainstay in the middle of the park.

He established an impressive partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg last season and the pair have continued from where they left off so far this campaign.

Bentancur put in his best performance of the season in Tottenham’s 6-2 win over Leicester on Saturday, with the midfielder netting his first goal for the Lilywhites in the game.

Dier waxed lyrical about the former Juve man after the game, speaking in glowing terms about his defensive work as well as his quality on the ball.

When asked about Bentancur’s performance against Leicester, the centre-back told Spurs Play (17/09/22): “Rodri is amazing. What a fantastic player. I think we play well when he plays well. I think that’s the biggest compliment that I can give to him.

“When he plays like he did in the second half we’re such a good team with him, because he offers so much defensively and then with the ball he’s got so much quality and a lot of personality as well to play and play in tight spaces.

“I’m really happy for him. Rodri was fantastic today.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Bentancur is an ideal fit for Conte’s system as the Uruguayan has a fabulous engine, is tactically astute and as Dier points out, is not afraid to play when he receives the ball. The 25-year-old is only likely to get better as he becomes more accustomed to the Premier League.
