We should have qualified instead of Spurs insists Inter’s star man

Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi believes that his side should have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League rather than Tottenham Hotspur.

The Italian side’s Champions League campaign came to an end last night following their failure to better Tottenham’s result against Barcelona.

PSV Eindhoven took a surprise lead at the San Siro when Hirving Lozano headed in at the near post after just 13 minutes.

Icardi did manage to equalise on 73 minutes only for Tottenham to draw level at the Nou Camp on 85 minutes through substitute Lucas Moura.

Deep into injury time it looked as if Icardi would have the chance to be the hero when he was through one on one with the goalkeeper but a goal-saving tackle from Nick Viergever denied their
star man.

Inter had beaten Spurs earlier in the competition 2-1 at home, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side winning the return match at Wembley 1-0. The fact that his side had managed to score away from home was enough to decide that the Premier League side would qualify for the next round.

Icardi told Sky Italy as quoted by Goal.com: “We had to win, we took a goal in the first half and then we arrived many times in the opposing area and we could not make two goals,”

“We deserved to qualify because we have shown that we can compete with everyone.”

The Italians will now drop into the Europa League, while the Champions League dream for Spurs continues.
