‘We stand with Sonny’ – Spurs made sad announcement about ‘racist abuse’

Tottenham Hotspur have taken to Twitter to announce that Heung-min Son was subjected to racist abuse during the match against West Ham United this evening.

Spurs welcomed the Hammers to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for another London derby, with the Lilywhites aiming to climb back into the top four and West Ham looking to escape the relegation zone.

Heung-min Son was named on the bench by Spurs, with Antonio Conte watching on from Italy while Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason took charge in the dugout.

However, the South Korean came off the bench to end his goal drought in the Premier League, slotting past Fabianski after welcoming an inch-perfect assist from Harry Kane in the second half.

That goal took Sonny to outright second on Tottenham’s chart of all-time leading Premier League goal scorers, with only Kane himself having more in the competition.

However, Spurs have now relayed reports that Son was subjected to racist abuse during his second-half performance, and called on the authorities and social media companies to take action.

The statement read: ‘We have been made aware of the utterly reprehensible online racist abuse directed at Heung-Min Son during today’s match, which has been reported by the Club. We stand with Sonny and once again call on the social media companies and authorities to take action.’

Spurs Web Opinion:

It is disgusting that this still happens today, and even more so that we are never shocked to read it. The people who turn sport and entertainment into something hateful and/or violent really do need to seek help, for the sake of their own health and the people around them. It is not good enough.
