‘We will see’ – Leipzig director speaks on speculation surrounding Sabitzer’s future

RB Leipzig sporting director, Markus Krosche has admitted that the club have not yet given up hope that rumoured Tottenham target Marcel Sabitzer could sign a new contract.

The speculation linking Sabitzer with a move to Spurs has intensified over the last few weeks.

Reports indicate that the midfielder, who has just 18 months left to run on his contract with the Bundesliga club, is being eyed by the North Londoners as a replacement for Dele Alli.

It has also been suggested that Sabitzer has made his desire to join Tottenham clear to the Leipzig hierarchy.

However, The Athletic claimed last week that a January deal is unlikely and that Spurs would prefer to move for him next summer.

Krosche has now said that the Germans are hopeful that the 26-year-old will extend his stay at the Red Bull Arena.

He told Sky Sports in Germany: “Marcel has matured as a person and is extremely important to us. Our clear goal is that he stays longer at RB Leipzig. We will see how in the next few weeks that develops.

“We will sound out how he sees his development and his future. However, we will also show him what we are planning and how we want to take the next development step.”

However, the Leipzig sporting director did include a caveat about the midfielder’s contract situation.

He added: “We are interested in not letting any top performers go free of charge.”

Reading between the lines, it sounds as though Leipzig want to hang on to the midfielder until the end of the season but will have to let him go in the summer if he refuses to sign a new deal. I believe Dele Alli is also unlikely to leave Spurs this month. I can see the England international joining PSG in the summer and Sabitzer being brought in as his replacement.
