‘We’re always looking’ – Antonio Conte hints at more new signings this summer

Antonio Conte has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur will continue to look for opportunities to strengthen their squad during the summer transfer window despite already making five new signings.

Spurs have been one of the busiest clubs in Europe in terms of incomings, with Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet arriving through the door so far.

Tottenham are said to be hopeful of agreeing on a deal with Middlesbrough for Djed Spence (Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast) and are also reportedly on the lookout for a playmaker (Evening Standard).

Conte has insisted that the clarity with which the club approached the transfer window made it easier to bring players in quickly.

Speaking at a press conference earlier today during the club’s tour of South Korea, the Italian told Football.London: “We signed five players and when the ideas are very clear, I think also for the club it’s more simple to go in the transfer window to go and sign the players. It was very clear our plan and the positions that we needed to improve.

“We did it, I think the club worked very well in this window for every coach to have the player quickly, it’s very important with them. I think this was good to sign five players quickly and now we’ll see.”

Conte stressed the need to have a strong squad for the upcoming season in order to compete on multiple fronts and stated that Spurs will not hesitate to act over the coming weeks if a market opportunity presents itself.

He added: “We’re always looking to strengthen the squad if there is the opportunity. We want to improve numerically the squad because to play four competitions is difficult and you need a really good squad.

“It will be a really demanding season for us but I’m sure we want to enjoy this season, play four competitions and be competitive in every competition we play. Then we’ll see in two months, if there is the possibility to strengthen the squad, then we’ll do it.”

If there was any doubt over the level of input Conte had on Tottenham’s new signings, the Spurs boss has answered that convincingly over the past couple of days. It is also clear from what he is saying here that the club will look to make at least a couple more additions before the window slams shut.
