‘We’re in the race’ – Jose Mourinho admits that Spurs are now in the hunt for title

Jose Mourinho has now admitted that Tottenham Hotspur are in the race for the 2019/20 Europa League title, despite not yet making it out of the group stages.

A win or draw against LASK tomorrow night would secure Spurs’ place in the knockout rounds of the competition with a game to spare.

Mourinho has only managed in the Europa League twice before, winning it on both occasions, and will be hoping to make it a hat-trick this season.

Incidentally, this could also break Tottenham’s 12-year wait for a trophy, dating back to their 2008 Carling Cup Final win over Chelsea.

Mourinho’s comments about the Europa League certainly nodded towards his words on the Premier League at the weekend, at which point he claimed that Spurs were a mere ‘pony’ in the horse race for the title (BBC).

When it comes to the Europa League, Mourinho admitted that the North Londoners were one of the most important horses.

He said (Football London): “In the Europa League, at this moment we’re in the race, we’re one of the most important horses in the race. We have to admit that.

“An English team in the Europa League is for sure an important club, but then, some important clubs are going to the competition later, which is something I never agreed [with] but it is the way it is.

“And for sure eight clubs that were not successful in the Champions League, instead of go home they come to the Europa League and that will change the dynamic of the competition.”
