‘We’re sure’ – Ben Davies reacts to early Sessegnon substitution in Wolves defeat

Ben Davies has explained that Antonio Conte’s decision to substitute Ryan Sessegnon against Wolves was purely a tactical decision.

Spurs suffered their third Premier League defeat in a row after recording a 2-0 loss at home to the Midlands side.

The hosts trailed within 20 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker capitalising on individual errors in the Spurs defence.

In a bid to shift momentum and system, Conte turned to his bench to make an early change with Sessegnon withdrawn for new signing Dajan Kulusevski after just 28 minutes.

Spurs transitioned into a 4-2-3-1 from their initial 3-4-3, with Davies moving into left-back in place of the 21-year-old from his role in a back three.

The Welshman has since admitted that Sessegnon will have found Conte’s decision a tough one to take but it needed to happen to try and get Spurs back into the game.

Davies said (via Football.London): “It’s never easy for that player when it happens but we’re sure it was a tactical decision and we had to go and take the chance. Unfortunately today Sess was that player.”

It could have been any player to come off in that time against Wolves because the performance was that bad, but it was Sessegnon in the end.

Something had to be done to try and stop Wolves playing through so easily, so now it is a case of ensuring his head doesn’t drop as a result of this.
