Pochettino opens up on his squad mentality in the midst of poor form

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino insists that his team is still united and working hard towards improving their recent form.

Spurs have started the new season poorly, already dropping 10 points in the Premier League. Tottenham have just eight points so far, putting them down in seventh in the table.

Across all competitions, Tottenham have won just two out of eight fixtures in the 2019/20 season.

Their most recent result came in the form of a shock defeat to Colchester United, a League Two side in the Carabao Cup.

Tottenham are without a trophy in over 11 years and the fans are desperate to see another piece of silverware lifted, so the cup exit came as a big blow.

However, Pochettino has now insisted that the team is talking and working harder, as well as trying to find balance in the squad while ignoring rumours.

Spurs take on Southampton at home this weekend and will be dying to get a comfortable win on the board after an awful week.

Poch said (Alasdair Gold): “We’re united. We’re talking, trying to work harder, being strong. We understand football well. We’re not young people managing a club like Tottenham. We know very well that when you’re not winning it’s important to have balance and not be affected by rumours.”

He added (Football London): “I am happy, with the squad that we have and now we need to perform with the squad we have. That responsibility is mine, to create that dynamic for us all to be together and start to perform in the way that we want.

“More than the performance it’s about not getting the results we wanted or expect. We were leading a lot of games and it’s not easy to have a positive result at a stadium like Manchester City’s. Look at what happened to all of the opponents after who visited there. It’s not easy to go there and be positive and take the draw and play well, or against Arsenal be 2-0 up and deserve to win the game but we draw.

“Against Leicester, of course, they are doing well, we were better, and against Olympiacos where nobody one there or different clubs were there never won and for us 2-0, okay it’s a circumstance, different circumstances sometimes that are against you and it’s a situation you need to be tough and fight against that to give your best to change the dynamic, that negative dynamic which increases because it’s football and that’s what happens in the business when you don’t win and people expect you win.

“Of course the pressure and the atmosphere is going to change but our responsibility is to keep this bubble and not be affected by the comments. When they are so good it’s to stay calm and relaxed too.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Talking is all well and good, but Spurs need to start showing heart, desire, and passion on the pitch, as well as results. If they don’t get back to winning ways soon, more questions will be asked of both the team and the manager.
