West Ham fan fined for abusing Tottenham star

A West Ham United fan has been fined for racially abusing Spurs winger Heung Min Son after pleading guilty this week (Guardian).

The supported was charged by the CPS after a complaint was made to the Metropolitan police by a fellow Hammers fan.

The incident occurred back in October 2018, during a Carabao Cup match between the two rivals in which Heung Min Son scored twice in a 3-1 Spurs victory.

The Guardian report that the fan was made to pay a fine of £184, as well as court fees of £110.

The fan pled guilty to using a ‘DVD’ slur towards Son, a racist term that is sometimes used to refer to Asian footballers.

West Ham have banned the fan, but the ban will be reviewed if he completes an education course and signs an acceptable-behaviour agreement.

This is not the first experience Son has had in England with this particular slur, as another fan asked him if he could get him a copy of the new Planet of the Apes film back in 2017.

Spurs Web Opinion:

This sums up racism in football for me. The guy pleads guilty to racially abusing a player. He gets fined a few hundred quid, and will probably have his ban lifted after attending this education course. What does that solve? What message does that send. The guy should be banned for life from every stadium in the country, as should anyone else who racially abuses. Fair play to the West Ham fan who reported him though.
