West Ham vs Leeds United history offers Tottenham fans plenty of optimism on Sunday

Tottenham Hotspur supporters will be keeping one eye firmly fixed on events at the London Stadium this weekend, and the historical record between West Ham United and Leeds United may provide the Lilywhites with a small reason for optimism ahead of the final day.

West Ham United would have thought their Premier League fate was sealed after they fell short against Newcastle United last weekend.

Hammers boss Nuno Espirito Santo looked dejected after the defeat and described West Ham’s survival chances as extremely difficult.

However, Tottenham’s loss against Chelsea means West Ham still has a shot at retaining their Premier League status, although they will once again be relying on favours from elsewhere.

If Nuno’s men are to remain a Premier League side next season, they will need Everton to beat Spurs while West Ham themselves beat Leeds United.

Any other result will see the Hammers relegated to the Championship.

West Ham vs Leeds record gives Tottenham reason for hope

The head-to-head record between West Ham and Leeds will leave the Hammers slightly concerned, while Spurs fans will be rubbing their hands together in hope.

The two sides have met 27 times in the Premier League, and it is the Whites who have mostly held the upper hand in those encounters.

Leeds United have won 16 times against West Ham United, while the Hammers have managed just six victories. That certainly makes for nice reading for Tottenham fans, but what about more recent results?

In the last 10 meetings, however, the record has been far more balanced, with neither side holding a clear advantage, and that may concern Spurs supporters.

Earlier this season, Leeds came out on top, while West Ham secured victory in the meeting before that. Overall, Leeds have won five of the last 10 encounters, while West Ham have won four, with one draw also recorded.

Spurs fans will hope Leeds repeat past results in London

At the London Stadium, though, the record is once again very close, with little separating the two sides.

West Ham came out on top the last time the clubs met in East London and have only won twice in their last five home meetings against Leeds, with the Whites winning another two, while one match ended level.

That makes it difficult to predict which side is most likely to come out on top when they meet again in London on Sunday, although Spurs supporters will be hoping Leeds get the better of the Hammers – or at the very least earn a draw.
