‘We’ve got enough to win a title’ – Harry Kane confident of Spurs Premier League charge

Harry Kane has admitted that the Tottenham players are hungry to win the title this season, having failed to get across the finishing line multiple times over the last five years.

Tottenham temporarily topped the table after their win against West Brom on Sunday, which was the first time the North Londoners had found themselves at the summit of the standings since August 2014 (Football.London).

At various points in the 2015/16 season and the 2016/17 season, it seemed as though it may have been Tottenham’s year but the Lilywhites eventually ended up losing out to Leicester and Chelsea respectively.

One could argue that the current Tottenham squad is much stronger than the ones that went close to winning the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino.

Kane insisted that the North Londoners have a good chance of going all the way since no team appears to be running away with the title.

The striker told The Daily Mail: “When you look at the ability of our squad you would definitely say that we’ve got enough to win a title.

“But I’d also say that we’ve been close over the last four, five years but just haven’t quite got over the line. So, it’s not as easy as just having a good squad and winning a few games to challenge for the title.

“This is a season where I don’t think one team is going to run away with it, like Liverpool did last year. There will be opportunities for other teams to put good runs together and get right up the table.

“We’ve got to make sure we don’t get carried away either. We know we’ve been playing well, we’ve been winning games, the last two games [against Brighton and Burnley] have been good for confidence, just to grind out results and to get good ugly wins under our belt. Because that’s what we’re going to need.

“There’s going to be times when we’re 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go or 2-1 up and we need to see the game out which we didn’t do early on in the season. So, that’s been pleasing. But, look, there’s a long way to go. We have to see where we are come February, March and go from there.”

Many players who were part of Pochettino’s squad that fell short five years ago are still at Spurs. Kane admitted that their past failings have made the Tottenham stars more hungry to succeed this time around.

The England captain added: “Every time you lose a big game or lose a final or lose a title race, you always wish you could have it back and do a little bit more and give every ounce you have.

“I think especially for myself, when I haven’t won a trophy yet in my professional career, it gives you that motivation to do even more.

“Look, it’s not just a one-man team. There’s a lot of us in this squad who have been here now for a period of time and haven’t won anything so we’re always as hungry as ever.

“We all know that it takes an awful lot to get over the line and we just need to find a way of doing it.”

This squad is much more experienced compared to the one in 15/17 and 16/17 and we are also much better equipped to deal with injury issues. It is clear from Kane’s words that there is genuine belief running through the squad that they can go all the way.
