‘We’ve seen players sit on their contracts’ – Whelan believes Spurs star may refuse move away

Noel Whelan has claimed that Danny Rose could decide to stay at Tottenham and see his contract out if the right club does not come in for him this summer.

The left-back was loaned out to Newcastle United in January after reports emerged that he had fallen out with Jose Mourinho (Daily Mail).

He proved during his loan spell at St James’ Park that he still has the attributes to perform consistently in the Premier League.

It was initially reported that Rose could complete a cut-price £5million transfer to Newcastle in the summer (Shields Gazette) but reports now indicate that the Magpies are unlikely to make a permanent move for the left-back.

Rose recently admitted that he would love nothing more than to play for Tottenham one last time and say a proper goodbye to the fans (Second Captains podcast).

Whelan believes that the England international will not be short of offers this summer but insisted that he will leave on his own terms.

When asked about the 30-year-old’s future, the former Coventry City striker told Football Insider: “Danny Rose seems to be quite a strong character, he speaks his mind.

“It’s not worked out at Tottenham, and that can be the case when a manager comes in. They like some of the players, they don’t like others.

“I think he knows where he stands with Tottenham, he knows he’s not wanted there and he’s got to find another football club, that’s for sure.

“He’d been given that opportunity at Newcastle and now they’re not going to take up that opportunity to buy him.

“There will be clubs out there looking at Danny Rose knowing that he has a lot to offer.

“It’s up to the player, we’ve seen players sit on contracts and will only go if the move is right for them.”

Spurs Web Opinion

At his age, Danny Rose only has a few more years of football left at the top level. I doubt he would want to waste one year sitting on the bench at Spurs. I can see a move back to Leeds being on the cards for the left-back after their promotion to the top flight. I can also see someone like Leicester or Everton coming in for Rose if they lose Chilwell or Digne respectively.
