Tottenham Hotspur centre half Toby Alderweireld’s future has been subject to a lot of speculation this summer as reports indicate that the defender has a £25 million release clause in his contract that can be activated until the last two weeks of the transfer window (The Guardian).

The 30-year-old was back to his consistent best last season for Mauricio Pochettino’s side after being benched for a lot of big games in the 17/18 season by the Argentine.

The Belgian international has been linked with a move to Manchester United (The Sun) as well as Juventus (The Mirror). Over the past few days, it has also been claimed that Tottenham are willing to offer Alderweireld plus cash to AS Roma in exchange for Nicolo Zaniolo, as the Italian club are looking for reinforcements in defence (Corriere dello Sport).

Another team that is in need for new additions at centre half are Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal. Some Arsenal fans took to Twitter to implore their club to test Tottenham’s resolve by bidding for Alderweireld.

A few of them even seemed convinced that they could land the Belgian if they tried.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Arsenal activate Alderweireld’s release clause, the defender is unlikely to want to move to the Gunners as they will not even be able to offer him Champions League football. We at Spurs Web would like the Belgian to stay for at least one more season so that the club can instead focus on improving other areas of the squad this summer.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. What a sad, delusional, bunch those Gooners are these days! Alderweireld to the Arse? Please, get real! He wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole. Too much class for one thing and then there is the Thursday night stigma. Plus a captain who doesn’t even want to be there! Dear me, talk about rats deserting the sinking ship, they might even drop out of the top 6 this season!

  2. I very much doubt Toby would move to Arsenal given the rivalry, but even if that wasn’t a concern surely he’d be looking to at least maintain his current level if not a step up ?

  3. Fools, why would he even contemplate going there, if no one comes in for him, he’ll stat at Spurs, in fact, if you believe some of the stuff that’s been written, I think he’d prefer to stay at Spurs. Also, unless I’m mistaken, isn’t there a clause in his contract, that forbids the sale to Arsenal should his release clause be activated?

    Dream on Arsenil, no chance.
