Tottenham Hotspur centre half Toby Alderweireld’s future has been subject to a lot of speculation this summer as reports indicate that the defender has a £25 million release clause in his contract that can be activated until the last two weeks of the transfer window (The Guardian).
The 30-year-old was back to his consistent best last season for Mauricio Pochettino’s side after being benched for a lot of big games in the 17/18 season by the Argentine.
The Belgian international has been linked with a move to Manchester United (The Sun) as well as Juventus (The Mirror). Over the past few days, it has also been claimed that Tottenham are willing to offer Alderweireld plus cash to AS Roma in exchange for Nicolo Zaniolo, as the Italian club are looking for reinforcements in defence (Corriere dello Sport).
Another team that is in need for new additions at centre half are Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal. Some Arsenal fans took to Twitter to implore their club to test Tottenham’s resolve by bidding for Alderweireld.
A few of them even seemed convinced that they could land the Belgian if they tried.
I just don't understand why @Arsenal are not in for Alderweireld for £25m. He's experienced, can go straight into the 1st team and will be a significant improvement on most of the current defenders. If Saliba is the future this is now @arseblog @gunnerblog @clivepafc your views?

I think Arsenal should prioritise defensive signings instead of signing zaha, we have plenty of firepower up top. Why not trigger Alderweireld's £25m release clause? #TransferTalk

Spurs Web Opinion
Even if Arsenal activate Alderweireld’s release clause, the defender is unlikely to want to move to the Gunners as they will not even be able to offer him Champions League football. We at Spurs Web would like the Belgian to stay for at least one more season so that the club can instead focus on improving other areas of the squad this summer.
