‘What a signing’ – Bent reacts to rumoured Spurs interest in ‘superstar’ midfielder

Darren Bent believes that Tottenham would be making a real statement of intent if they managed to land Barcelona midfielder, Philippe Coutinho, this summer.

Spurs have been linked with a move for Coutinho recently, with reports suggesting that the 27-year-old is desperate to return to the Premier League after Bayern Munich rejected the chance to sign him permanently (The Mirror).

The Lilywhites were also rumoured to be in for the midfielder last summer. (Sport via Sport Witness) claimed that the deal to take Coutinho to North London collapsed last summer due to financial reasons, a claim that has been denied by his agent (Daily Mail).

Bent has now been raving about the former Liverpool star and insists that he is the kind of player Tottenham need to be looking at in order to take them to the next level.

When asked about Tottenham’s interest in Coutinho, Bent told Football Insider: “That’s the one you’ve got to get, you need them type of signings coming through the door because he is definitely somebody who is exciting, can do good things.

“He’s that world-class name that people will be like: ‘Okay, Spurs are taking it seriously.’ You look at last season, we thought they were linked with a couple of superstars – Coutinho, Dybala – and they couldn’t get it over the line.

“Were they really interested in getting these players in or was it just to appease the crowd but obviously, if they can somehow get this guy in the door, then what a signing that is.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I was desperately hoping that we would land Coutinho last summer as I thought he would have been the ideal replacement for Christian Eriksen. However, it looked like the club were exploring him as an alternative to Giovani Lo Celso and I believe we made the right call to go for the Argentine. I don’t expect us to be in for Coutinho this summer as he doesn’t strike me as a Mourinho type of player.
