‘What a signing’ – Ex-Spurs man believes free agent can challenge Moura for starting spot

Former Tottenham striker, Darren Bent, has urged the Lilywhites to do everything in their power to snap up Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser, whose contract runs out in the summer.

Tottenham and Arsenal were both said to be competing for the Scotland international’s services this summer (TEAMtalk).

However, recent reports indicate that Spurs have moved into pole position, as the winger has told those close to him that he wishes to move to the Lilywhites (Football Insider).

Former Leeds United forward, Noel Whelan, believes Jose Mourinho could employ Ryan Fraser as a wing-back next season but Bent disagrees with that assessment.

He feels that the Bournemouth star will primarily be used on the right-hand side and sees him pushing Lucas Moura for a starting birth next season.

While he admitted that Fraser is not a name that will excite fans, he insisted that signing him on a free transfer would be a fantastic coup for his former side.

Speaking to Football Insider about Tottenham’s rumoured interest in Fraser, Bent said: “It’s another body in the door but where does he fit in? You look at their front three and he could potentially fit in on the right.

“You’ve got Heung-min Son on the left, Harry Kane through the middle and maybe Fraser on the right, battling with Lucas Moura. It would be a great signing and if you can get him on a free as well, wow, what a signing that would be.

“If I’m Spurs I’m going all out to get that type of player but don’t make that your be-all and end-all. We saw Manchester United do that with Daniel James and yeah, he did very, very well but I’m sure United weren’t expecting him to do as well as he did.

“If Spurs can get him in on a free, that’s a very, very good start.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe Mourinho will see Fraser as a utility player who is capable of filling in at attacking midfield, on the wings, and at wing-back. I can see why Jose would like the 26-year-old given his work rate and tenacity. He would be a solid addition and help fill some gaps in the squad.
