‘What am I meant to say’ – Postecoglou comments on Tottenham’s top four hopes

Tottenham Hotspur lost ground in the race for a spot in the top four this evening with a frustrating defeat against Fulham, but Ange Postecoglou has told the press his side are still very much in the fight, and insists he is more concerned with the way the team plays.

After beating Aston Villa last weekend, and with Unai Emery’s side not playing until tomorrow, Spurs had a great chance to break into the Premier League top four this evening as they travelled to Craven Cottage to face Fulham.

That chance has been well and truly wasted, however, as Ange Postecoglou‘s men succumbed to an uninspiring 3-0 defeat against Fulham this evening.

A fairly even first half was eventually won by the home side when Rodrigo Muniz applied a cool finish to put his team ahead just before the break. Fulham then doubled their lead early in the second half, before adding a third on the hour to kill the game.

Postecoglou more interested in performance than league table

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Postecoglou was asked about his teams’ hopes of finishing in the top four, and had a fairly sharp response.

He said: “It’s all over so we’ll just go for sixth. What am I meant to say to that? We’re two points behind Villa. It’s 10 games to go, there’s so much football to play. I don’t worry about that stuff. It’s not about just falling into a place in the ladder.

“We could finish fourth, great, it’s nothing this football club haven’t done. It’s about how we play.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I know qualifying for the Champions League wasn’t really the goal for this season, and it may well be that finishing fifth is enough anyway, but this defeat does feel really disappointing in the grand scheme of things. We have to be better if we want to be fighting up there at the top of the table.
