A new update has shed light on the feeling at Barcelona about Cristian Romero, who has fallen short of his high standards this season at Tottenham.

Reports from Spain have suggested that Barca could be doing some groundwork on potential discount deals from Tottenham, as the Lilywhites fight to secure their Premier League status.

Prime among their targets is Cristian Romero, who Barca have identified as a ‘Plan B’ if they are priced out of a move for Alessandro Bastoni.

It emerged a few days ago that the Catalan club’s interest in the Spurs defender had led to nervousness at Inter Milan, who were hoping to get a big fee for Bastoni.

Tottenham star Cristian Romero’s leadership is valued highly by Hansi Flick

A new report in Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) has now suggested that the Spurs captain has the characteristics that Hansi Flick is looking for.

Romero’s leadership qualities are valued by the Barca boss, with the outlet using what the German coach had said recently about Inigo Martinez, who is now at Al-Nassr, a hint for the type of defender he wants to sign.

Flick said: “Last season we had Inigo Martínez, who was a great leader. We need players who are capable of leading on the pitch.

“It’s not just about talking about tactics; we need the players to let their performance on the field do the talking. In Champions League matches, we need players who can show us where we need to go.”

The report concludes that the Tottenham star has ‘more than enough pedigree’ to slot into Flick’s backline, having won the Copa America twice, the World Cup and the Europa League.

Romero is not seen as the perfect fit for Barca

Sport say that the La Liga giants continue to view Romero as a Plan B, with the Spurs man not seen as the perfect option for the club’s backline.

This is because Romero lacks ‘Bastoni’s finesse’, but the Argentine is still seen as a ‘good fit’ for the Barca backline.

It is suggested that the Catlaan club believe Romero could leave Tottenham for a ‘very good price’, claiming that he is valued at around €50m (£43.1m).

The publicatoon adds that the 28-year-old’s price could drop even further if Roberto De Zerbi’s men are relegated.
