‘What happened at Arsenal’ – Merson makes Tottenham transfer claim about Conte

Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur have to back Antonio Conte in the transfer window but insisted the club’s expenditure on the stadium could prevent them from being able to spend big, just as it did at Arsenal.

With the transfer window now officially open, Conte will get his first opportunity to address what he deems to be the weaknesses in the Tottenham squad.

The Italian admitted last week that he has completed the evaluation of his players and is set to have a meeting with the Spurs hierarchy to discuss potential incomings and departures.

According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, Tottenham are expected to target a new right-wing-back, a left-sided centre-back and a forward this month.

Merson has now insisted that Tottenham would be making a mistake by not giving Conte exactly what he needs, insisting the 52-year-old is one of the five best managers in world football.

The former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports News (01/01/22 at 2:05 pm): “I don’t know what the situation is with the finances (at Tottenham) but they have built a big stadium.

“We have seen it across the road at Arsenal and what happened at Arsenal. What they had to do.

“They had to sell a top-quality player every year to get by. Let alone buy one, so that will be interesting.

“You would like to think they would (find the funds) for this manager. They ended up getting a top, top draw manager. I would say he is in the top five in the world and where he has been.

“If you are going to do that and he’s coming here, then you have to give him the money. And you can trust him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no way Conte would have come to Spurs unless he has got assurances regarding transfer funds. However, big-money deals rarely ever happen in January.

So, I expect the majority of Tottenham’s spending to be done in the summer. I do not see more than two new players arriving through the door this month.
