What latest UEFA coefficient rankings mean for Spurs’ Champions League hopes

After the latest round of results in the three European competitions, Football.London have revealed the Premier League is set to miss out on the extra Champions League spot as things stand.

With the Champions League format set to change next season, an extra spot will be handed to the two countries with the highest UEFA coefficient ranking based on the results in the three competitions this season.

However, this week was not a good one for English sides in Europe, with both Manchester City’s and Arsenal’s semi-final hopes in the balance after their draws against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are all but out of the Europa League after they fell to a shock 3-0 defeat at home to Atalanta while West Ham’s hopes of making the final four are hanging by a thread after they suffered a late 2-0 loss at Bayer Leverkusen.

Tottenham’s Champions League chances have taken a blow

Aston Villa are favourites to progress to the semi-final of the Europa Conference League after overcoming Lille 2-1 in France on Thursday.

After the latest round of results, Italy are all but assured of an extra Champions League spot, with the Serie A having a coefficient ranking of 18.428.

However, Germany (16.785) has now leapfrogged England (16.750) which means that unless results improve for English sides, the extra spot will go to the Bundesliga and a fifth-place finish in the Premier League will not be enough to qualify.

Tottenham’s hopes of a top four finish took a significant blow yesterday following their 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United and dropped back into fifth place as a result of the goals conceded with Aston Villa in action at Arsenal later today.

Spurs Web Opinion

Some Tottenham may find themselves in the weird position of wanting Arsenal to beat Bayern to ensure that the Premier League outdoes the Bundesliga in terms of co-efficient points.

Regardless of what happens in these ties, the Spurs players will want to guarantee qualification for the Champions League by finishing fourth.
