What Poch said when asked about Foyth’s error for Arsenal’s third goal

Mauricio Pochettino has defended Juan Foyth when he was asked about the defender’s mistake that led to Arsenal’s third goal.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender was punished for giving the ball away when substitute Alexandre Lacazette put Arsenal in front.

The Spurs boss refused to lay the blame at the feet of the young central defender by instead insisting that Foyth was one of his side’s better performers.

Tottenham have now dropped more points from winning positions in Premier League games against Arsenal than any side has against another in the competition (40).

The mistake from Foyth coupled with a well below standard display from Jan Vertonghen which saw him give away a penalty and later get sent off did have some fans questioning why Toby Alderweireld was left on the bench for a North London derby.

The result means that Tottenham now sit outside of the top four in the Premier League after being overtaken by their rivals.

Pochettino told Football.London: “How many players in our half of the pitch have missed the pass? A lot. Then there’s 50m until you arrive at the goal. Because he’s young, it’s easy to blame him. But for me Juan was one of the best players on the pitch. If we put this pass that wasn’t good in that action out of the 90 minutes, he was by far the best, by far.”
