What the new squad numbers hint about Pochettino’s right-back decision

Tottenham Hotspur announced their new squad numbers for the 2019/20 season yesterday, with one notable number missing from the list.

Kieran Trippier’s old number two remains unused for the season, but what does that imply about Pochettino and his team choices.

With Tripps gone, Poch needs a new first-choice right-back, that’s for sure. He has now been left with Kyle Walker-Peters, Serge Aurier, and Juan Foyth who could fill the position.

Walker-Peters is likely to start at right-back for the first couple of games of the season, with Aurier not featuring in pre-season and Foyth injured/banned.

However, beyond the start of the campaign, Pochettino seems undecided. If one player had been handed that number two shirt, then you could imply that they would be the Argentine’s new go-to man.

But, no number two seems to suggest that Poch is still willing to be convinced by all three possibilities.

It could also mean that Spurs are open to bringing in a new right-back in the transfer market in the near future if none of these three make a good impression.
