What Tottenham have to do to qualify for Conference League knockouts

Tottenham Hotspur fell to a woeful 2-1 defeat away to NS Mura this evening in the Europa Conference League, conceding a last-minute goal to make topping Group G impossible.

Even with just a 1-1 draw against Mura, Spurs would have had the chance to top the group with a win over Rennes next time out, thanks to Vitesse Arnhem’s 3-3 comeback.

However, things are now much more complicated for the Lilywhites as we head towards the final week of fixtures.

In order to qualify for the knockouts of the Europa Conference League, the third tier of European football, Tottenham will have to play three games.

First up, Spurs need to match whatever result Vitesse Arnhem get against NS Mura when they come up against Rennes.

Spurs and Vitesse are level on points in the table, both with one win and one defeat in head to head results. However, Tottenham have a better goal difference.

Therefore, as long as they match Vitesse’s result and ensure they do not make up two-goal difference points on them, they will go through in second place.

However, Spurs will then be drawn against a team that finishes third in their Europa League group to play a two-legged play-off round.

Progress through this double header and Tottenham will then get a chance to play among the elite of Europa Conference League knockout football.
