What Tottenham insiders think about Micky van de Ven and potential new contract

A new report has shed light on how highly Micky van de Ven is valued by Tottenham and what the North London club are thinking about a new contract for the centre-back.

Van de Ven’s solo goal against Copenhagen left everyone in awe, with even rival fans waxing lyrical about the Spurs centre-back.

It is not often that you see a central defender going past five or six players and dribbling the length of the pitch before finding the back of the net.

That moment perhaps encapsulates why many of the biggest clubs in Europe are after Van de Ven, but Tottenham have no plans of letting him go.

In fact, it has been alleged over recent weeks that Spurs CEO Vinai Venkatesham is now focused on tying Van de Ven down to a new contract, and a new report has now shed light on the feeling inside the North London club about the 24-year-old.

Tottenham believe they have the best centre-back partnership in the Premier League

The Telegraph have now revealed that Spurs are keen to reward the Netherlands international with a new contract to reflect his value to the side.

The report says that internally at Tottenham, the feeling is that there is no better centre-back pairing than Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

After making the Argentine the club’s highest-paid player a few months ago, the Lilywhites want to hand his centre-back partner a bumper pay rise to match his stature in the squad.

Tottenham are not under any pressure as Van de Ven has three and a half years left on his deal, but the report says that the club are keen to extend the former Wolfsburg man’s contract beyond 2029.

Van de Ven is now one of the leaders of the Spurs side

Thomas Frank named Van de Ven in his new Tottenham leadership group over the likes of Pedro Porro and Rodrigo Bentancur, which caught many fans by surprise.

That reflects what the Dane thinks of the centre-back and the voice that he now has in the Spurs changing room.

In fact, Van de Ven is now effectively Tottenham’s vice-captain, having been the man to wear the armband when Romero is out injured, although it remains to be seen if that changes once James Maddison is back fit.
