What Tottenham need in the away leg to reach the Champions League final

Tottenham Hotspur took a vital 1-0 lead to Manchester back in the Champions League quarter-final second leg, a goal that proved to be enough to seal victory for the Lilywhites.

However, Spurs will not be taking a lead to Ajax in the semi-final second leg, as Pochettino’s men lost their home tie 1-0 last night.

Gifting Ajax an away goal, while also failing to capitalise on the home advantage, would have been Tottenham’s worst nightmare before the match.

But, all is not lost, as the semi-final is a game of two legs, and it is only half time.

A 1-0 scoreline is hardly a huge margin for Tottenham to overturn in the Netherlands, and with Son and Sissoko hopefully back in the starting line up, Spurs could have a chance.

So, what score lines would take Spurs through to the Champions League final?

The first part is simple enough, Tottenham need a win to have any chance of qualification.

However, a 1-0 away win would only be enough to force extra time, levelling up both the aggregate score and the away goals tally for both teams.

Any win in which Spurs score more than one goal will send Pochettino’s side through to the final. Even if Ajax score themselves, as long as Tottenham score two and win, the away goals rule will count in their favour.

Any Tottenham draw or loss will see Ajax progress to play Liverpool or Barcelona in the final.

Realistic scorelines that will see Spurs progress:

0-1 – Spurs win on penalties

1-2

0-2

1-3

0-3

2-3
