Jan Paul Van Hecke’s comments about Roberto De Zerbi’s exit from Brighton are very revealing as Tottenham continue talks with Brighton over a deal for the centre-back.

On Thursday morning, many Spurs fans woke up to the news that Tottenham had a bid turned down for Van Hecke, who has just one year left on his contract at Brighton.

The Seagulls want Spurs to pay £50m for the centre-back, as negotiations continue between the North Londoners and the South Coast club.

Sources from the Netherlands have said that Van Hecke is keen on completing a move to Tottenham and is close to agreeing personal terms with the Lilywhites ahead of his transfer.

Jan Paul Van Hecke’s past comments show what he thinks of Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi

Van Hecke worked with De Zerbi for two years at the Amex, and under the Italian’s tutelage, the Dutchman evolved into one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League.

When the current Spurs boss eventually parted ways with Brighton two years ago, the defender was heartbroken, and he took to social media to send a touching message to De Zerbi.

Van Hecke wrote on Instagram at the time: “Gaffer, thank you very much! You changed my life! I’m really thankful for what you did for me. I’m really upset you are leaving.”

De Zerbi’s relationship with Van Hecke could give Spurs a huge advantage in transfer race

The Lilywhites are not the only ones chasing the Brighton man, with reports indicating that Liverpool and Chelsea are ready to challenge Tottenham for Van Hecke.

Interest from those clubs could turn the 25-year-old’s head, but it is clear from his message to De Zerbi back in 2024 that he shares a special connection with the Spurs boss.

The Italian would have likely already spoken to the centre-back regarding a reunion at Tottenham, and the De Zerbi factor could end up being crucial in the North Londoners winning the race for the lanky defender.
