When does the £25m release clause in Alderweireld’s contract end?

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to hold onto the majority of their best players this summer, as well as further adding to the strength and depth of the squad.

Toby Alderweireld has consistently been one of Tottenham’s and one of the Premier League’s very best central defenders ever since arriving from Atletico Madrid.

Alongside fellow Belgian and ex-Ajax player Jan Vertonghen, Alderweireld has been an absolute brick wall for the last few years in North London.

However, Toby’s contract was due to come to an end this summer, unless Spurs chose to extend the deal by an extra year.

Back in early 2019, Tottenham decided to do just this, but an extension did activate a clause in Alderweireld’s contract that would allow him to leave for just £25m this summer (Guardian).

While there have not been any reported bids for the centre-back as of yet this transfer window, the £25m release clause does not end until two weeks before the end of the transfer window.

With the window closing on August 8 for Prem clubs this season, Alderweireld’s clause should cease to exist on July 25.
