Report explains why Spurs star’s transfer has not been announced yet

The Independent have revealed that the reason Harry Winks’ move to Leicester City has not yet been confirmed is down to the fact that the midfielder’s loan spell at Sampdoria only officially ends today.

Winks now looks set to leave his boyhood club, with reports first emerging earlier this week that the England international is expected to head to Leicester City in a completely separate transfer from the one which brought James Maddison to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (The Evening Standard).

Alasdair Gold took to social media to reveal on Wednesday the deal to take Winks to the Foxes would be worth £10m while Fabrizio Romano stated on Thursday that the 27-year-old is set to undergo medical before signing on the dotted line with the side which suffered relegation to the Championship at the end of the last campaign.

Winks has found first-team opportunities limited in recent seasons and spent the last campaign on loan in Serie A with Sampdoria and has been allowed to depart with just a year left on his contract to run.

On top of injury problems, it was a season to forget for the player after his side suffered relegation from the Italian top-flight.

New Leicester boss Enzo Maresca is said to believe that Winks has the ability and versatility to be a key cog in his side as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking under their new manager.

Harry Winks’ move to Leicester could happen this weekend

The Independent have now become the latest publication to suggest that Winks’s switch to the King Power Stadium has been fully agreed, with PA journalist George Sessions, who wrote the article taking to Twitter earlier this morning to reveal that the transfer could be confirmed this weekend.

Sessions wrote: “Harry Winks’ loan with Sampdoria officially ends today, which will allow Leicester to confirm his £10million transfer this weekend.

“Curiously he made 203 apps for #THFC – the same number Maddison made for #LCFC. A key figure under Poch, move suits everyone.”

He will depart after spending 21 years at the club and has not made a competitive appearance for Spurs since the 2021/22 season.

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect that a couple of Premier League clubs (potentially the likes of Burnley and Forest) would have shown interest in Winks but I believe the midfielder has made the right decision in dropping down to the Championship with the Foxes since he now needs regular minutes to rebuild his confidence and to prove himself.
