Jun’ai Byfield’s Tottenham debut and development

Byfield made his debut for the Tottenham first-team on 20 January, 2026, coming on as a second-half substitute in the Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund. It was an especially important moment for Byfield, as he became the club’s youngest-ever player in the competition.

He played 28 minutes in the win over the German giants and got a good review from us in our Spurs player ratings vs Dortmund.

Born and raised in London, Byfield has been with the club since he was eight-years-old, coming through the Tottenham academy. He’s represented Spurs at every youth level, mostly for the Under-18s before stepping up to the Under-21 squad and getting noticed by the senior side.

He captained the Under-17 side to Premier League Cup success, has featured in the UEFA Youth League, and made his debut for the Under-18s at just 15-years-old. Byfield only signed his first professional contract with Spurs in December 2025.

What kind of player is Byfield?

Byfield is a centre-back and is right-footed. Interestingly, he was formerly a striker, but switched to defence when he was 11-years-old.

On his Spurs debut, however, he did operate in a right wing-back role at times, and still looked comfortable and calm.

Byfield is a big, strong, imposing defender who already has a physicality and dominance to his game despite being so young. He’s a unit of a centre-half who is great in the air, but is also just as comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Time and time again, Byfeld has been praised for his progressive carries and the way he can penetrate the lines with his passing. He’s also quick, intelligent, and has exceptional defensive awareness.

He may be an elegant defender who suits a modern style of play, but Byfield is not afraid to do the dirty work. He’s a tenacious tackler and loves to press his opponents. He’s even been compared to Tottenham legend Ledley King, which is high praise indeed.

How do Tottenham feel about Jun’ai Byfield?

After Byfield’s debut, Thomas Frank discussed how impressed he had been with the youngster in training and emphasised the way his teammates trusted Byfield.

Frank also cited the player’s high potential and added how well Byfield slotted into the team against Dortmund, saying: “He didn’t look out of place… I rate him highly. It’s one thing to make your debut in the final minutes of a game but to come in on a Champions League night against Dortmund like that when you need to win. Wow. So calm and assured.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham expert John Wenham said: “I think Byfield is right up there in terms of his ceiling. He is absolutely unbelievable.

“In a recent game, he scored a really good goal, which is no surprise as he used to be a striker when he first started playing, so it isn’t unusual that he still has that finishing ability. However, his all-round game is just immense, he has got every attribute going, which is really exciting.”

He’s climbing the ranks in the England setup

It’s not just in North London that Byfield is getting noticed. He’s making good progress with England at youth level, too.

He made his debut for England Under-16s in October 2023 and has four caps at that age group. He moved on to the Under-17 setup in September 2024 and has 13 appearances there.

Byfield is now with the England Under-18s, having made his debut at that level in September 2025. He’s even scored a goal there, in a 3-2 win over Canada; a game in which he was named captain.

Neil Ryan has been his coach at every level for England so far, and clearly has a lot of faith in the Tottenham teenager.

His full name is Jun’ai De’Andre Ashlee Byfield. He was born in Lambeth, London, on 6 December 2008, making him 17-years-old at the time of his debut.
