According to WhoScored’s stats, Guglielmo Vicario has been the best goalkeeper on show in the Premier League this season.
Vicario was a relative unknown for Premier League fans when he arrived through the door last summer but he won over the Tottenham fans instantly and has quite quickly established an impressive reputation in the English top-flight.
The Italian’s shot-stopping has been second to none this season, with the Spurs number one pulling off outstanding full-stretched saves time and again.
His decision-making in possession and in coming out of his line has also been nearly flawless, which is crucial given the way Ange Postecoglou’s side play.
However, over recent weeks, Vicario has been questioned for his ability to deal with set-pieces, with opposition teams now evidently targeting him by putting a man on his during every corner kick.
Some pundits have suggested that his handling of corners and free-kicks is a weakness in the 27-year-old’s game (TNT Sports 1 – 03/02/24 via Daily Mail) but Tottenham fans might feel that the goalkeeper has perhaps not been given sufficient protection by the referees.

Despite those blemishes over recent weeks, Vicario is still the best-performing goalkeeper this season according to Whoscored, with the Spurs star registering an average rating of 6.86 per game.

I am sceptical about how these ratings are calculated as simply using metrics like shots saved or expected goals do not sufficiently capture how well different goalkeepers have performed.
Having said that, there is no doubt that Vicario has saved a huge number of goals for Tottenham this season and has been up there with the best number one in the division.
