Toby Alderweireld’s chances of staying at Spurs may have just increased

Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham has been the subject of plenty of speculation over the last few months.

The defender’s contract has contains a £25 million release clause that can be activated until July 26th; two weeks prior to the closing of the transfer window (The Guardian).

The club which were reported to the furthest along in negotiations with Spurs for the Belgian international was Roma.

The Serie A club’s sporting director recently confirmed their interest in the defender and admitted that former Tottenham technical director Franco Baldini was assisting the club in their negotiations (Football Italia).

Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio suggested earlier that Roma were considering Gianluca Mancini from Atlanta as an alternative to Alderweireld.

Calico Mercato are now reporting that Roma have struck a deal with Atlanta for Mancini and that the 23-year-old is soon due in the Italian capital for a medical.

With Alderweireld’s release clause expiring soon, if Roma back away from the deal then it could mean that the defender may end up staying in North London beyond this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is always the possibility that this is a smokescreen by Roma in an attempt to get Spurs to relax their demands for Alderweireld. However, we think it would be great for Spurs if the Belgian ends up staying and signs a new contract as he certainly has a few good years of football left in him.
