‘Why not?’ – Pundit insists Spurs should not hesitate to snap up midfielder in January

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent believes the North Londoners should not hesitate to re-sign Christian Eriksen when the transfer window reopens in January.

Eriksen has continued to be overlooked by Antonio Conte at Inter Milan this season and has failed to get a consistent run in the side.

The midfielder admitted in an interview last week that his time at the Serie A giants has not gone according to plan and hinted that he could be open to leaving the San Siro in January (TV2 Sport via Football Italia).

Reports indicate that Inter are keen to get the Dane off their wage bill and have offered him to several Premier League clubs including Tottenham (Football Insider).

Some Spurs fans are not particularly keen on having the 28-year-old back given the way in which the midfielder demanded to leave the club back in January of this year.

While Bent acknowledged that Eriksen might have trouble breaking into the Spurs side given the options Jose Mourinho now has at his disposal, he insisted that the Lilywhites know that they will be getting a quality player for potentially a cut-price deal.

When asked if Tottenham should seriously consider re-signing Eriksen, the pundit told Football Insider: “Why not? We know he’s a player with a lot of quality.

“Why would they not try and get him back?

“Where would he fit for Mourinho is the question? We know he’s been a very, very good player.

“The midfield is looking very good down there at Spurs so it’s a little bit of a toughie.

“I always think, and this will never change, football clubs having as many good players in the building as possible rather than scratching around trying to find good players.

“If you can get them back at a ridiculous cut price then yes, I would.

“He knows the Premier League, it’s not like you’re signing a player and wondering how they’re going to adapt.”

The concern with re-signing Eriksen is that his form in his final year and a half at Spurs left a lot to be desired. While one could have put that down to his willingness to leave at the time, his form for Inter has not ben any better either since he joined the club.

So, there might be a deeper problem preventing him from reaching the level he used to. As we have seen with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Fernando Torres in the past, players sometimes suddenly lose their spark and never quite manage to get back to their best.
