Why Spurs decided against signing this Premier League star

All the talk in the summer was of a Tottenham move for Championship attacking midfielder Jack Grealish, but should Spurs have been looking elsewhere?

Back in 2015, Tottenham actually came close to signing a teenage James Maddison, now of Leicester (Standard).

The young Englishman has since taken to Premier League life like a duck to water, scoring five goals since joining the Foxes.

Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp raved about the prospect to his ex-Spurs colleagues back in 2015, and there was a £350,000 deal talked about.

Maddison is now worth more than 200 times that price after his £22m move to Leicester City in the summer.

Spurs did keep tabs on the player through the years, but believed £22m was too far over what he was worth, especially when he was unlikely to get much game time at Spurs.

Maddison would have to knock Eriksen, Winks, Alli, Moura, Son, and Lamela out of their first team positions to get any kind of consistent game time.

Should Spurs have paid up?
