The entire Tottenham Hotspur squad across both their men’s and women’s teams wore mismatched socks during training on Wednesday, and the club have now revealed the heartwarming reason behind the initiative.
Many Spurs fans will have kept an eagle eye over the training pictures released by the club on Wednesday in order to piece together any injury updates ahead of the big clash against AZ Alkmaar this evening.
However, something else would have caught the eye of the supporters: all the players were wearing colourful, mismatched socks during training.
It turns out there is a very specific and heart-warming reason behind this wardrobe choice, and Tottenham have now revealed all.

Tottenham raise awareness for World Down Syndrome Day
Tottenham have now confirmed that their players appeared in mismatched and oddly coloured socks to raise awareness for World Down Syndrome Day.
World Down Syndrome Day falls on March 21 and has been observed since 2022, while Down Syndrome Awareness Week runs from Monday, March 16 until Sunday, March 22.
The Tottenham Hotspur statement reads: “We are proudly supporting Down Syndrome Awareness Week, with our men’s and women’s first-team players today training in colourful mismatched socks.
“Wearing mismatched socks is the perfect way to show that no two people are the same – regardless of the number of chromosomes they have.
“People across the world are encouraged to take part by ‘rocking their socks’ on Thursday, March 21, World Down Syndrome Day. Our players wore a range of colourful mismatched socks, provided by Nike, at a session attended by young people with Down syndrome and their families.”
Two players unavailable for the Alkmaar game
While Tottenham have been boosted by the return of key players over recent weeks, Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Kevin Danso and Richarlison are not expected to play until after the international break.
The pair join Dejan Kulusevski and long-term absentee, Radu Dragusin, on the treatment table, while Rodrigo Bentacnur is suspended for the clash against Alkmaar after the midfielder picked up his third yellow card of the Europa League campaign in the first leg.
