‘Will choose Tottenham’ – £11m Spurs signing urges club to appoint 51-year-old

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama has been discussing his time working with Mauricio Pochettino, and suggested the Argentine should return to his old club this summer instead of joining Chelsea.

Pochettino presided over the most successful period of Spurs’ recent history, leading the club to regular top four finishes and a Champions League final. He was sacked just six months after that cup final defeat, in November 2019.

Wayama played under Pochettino during their time together at Southampton and made the move to north London in a £11million deal in the summer of 2016 (Guardian).

Since then, the popular manager coached PSG before parting ways with the French giants at the end of last season. He has been out of work all season, but is seemingly set to return to the Premier League in the immediate future.

Spurs are in need of a new permanent manager and many fans have pushed for a Pochettino return, but reports suggest the North London club have not even contacted the 51-year-old to discuss the vacancy (talkSPORT).

It is London rivals Chelsea who are in the driving seat when it comes to appointing Pochettino, with a report from 90 Min claiming the Blues are close to announcing the former Spurs boss as their new manager.

However, Wanyama, who played under Pochettino, thinks Spurs are missing a trick by not going in for their former boss.

He told London World: “I get it and I get how the fans feel and Poch (Pochettino) should be the manager of Tottenham next season not Chelsea.

“I can understand the frustration within the fanbase because they know Pochettino gave everything and I believe if there are two offers on the table between Chelsea and Tottenham, then the Pochettio I know will choose Tottenham.”

On the experience of working with Pochettino, Wanyama added: “To be honest all I want is for Poch to be happy and to get back to doing what he loves the most and what makes him happy, so if he’s happy, I’m happy. He will always be a mentor to me and a father figure to me, he showed me the game and improved my game massively.

“We’ve been through so much together so I can only support him with whatever decision he makes, I know football is strange because you can end up where you don’t expect but we are still human after football and it will always stay like that.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I feel like I am one of the few Spurs fans who isn’t crying out for Mauricio Pochettino to come back.

He did amazing things in his time with us, but I think we need a different approach, someone who can really change things at the club, rather than reverting back to what we had four years ago.
