‘Will hate me’ – Pundit names 36-year-old as the man to replace Conte at Spurs

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur should look to replace Antonio Conte with Vincent Kompany, should the Italian depart as head coach.

Kompany is on the verge of leading Burnley to an immediate return to the Premier League, having only been appointed as the Clarets’ manager in the summer after he quit last May as head coach at Anderlecht, where he spent three years.

Burnley have been in impressive form in the Championship and are currently thirteen points ahead of second-place Sheffield United.

The Belgian turns 37 next month and has been backed by Pep Guardiola to replace him as Manchester City boss in the future (Daily Mail).

Tottenham gave their hopes of a top four finish a boost on Saturday when they beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium courtesy of a brace from Harry Kane and a much-needed goal from Heung-min Son.

Conte’s future in north London has been cast in doubt with reports suggesting the 53-year-old is looking increasingly set to depart at the end of the current campaign (Mirror).

Cascarino told talkSPORT: “Now there’s an opportunity out there that is going to be jumped on by somebody very quickly. And I think if they do lose Conte, which pretty much looks like is going to happen in the summer, there’s one person that stands out for me – Vincent Kompany.

“He stands out for me as one to jump the queue and get in because I’ve listened to his team talks, you can look at how he’s changed a football club so dramatically in a very short space of time.

“The Burnley fans will hate me but will love the way that he’s producing a team to play football, how exciting they’ve been.”

Kompany is still in his infancy as Burnley boss and needs more top-flight experience before he is able to make the jump to manage a top six club.

While Spurs have a rebuild on their hands and have tried to appoint quick-win managers in the shape of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, they need an experienced manager to oversee matters.

Mauricio Pochettino or Luis Enrique would be a more sensible appointment and is one which Daniel Levy cannot afford to get wrong with the club having stood still since the departure of the Argentine.
