‘Will remember this’ – Ex-player claims Son will not forget decision to bench him

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves praised the character of Heung-min Son after the striker played a pivotal role in helping Tottenham Hotspur to a 6-2 win over Leicester City.

Spurs head coach Antonio Conte took the decision to drop the South Korean for the visit of the Foxes after he had failed to score in any of Tottenham’s opening six Premier League outings, instead opting for a front three of Harry Kane, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison.

With the score at 3-2 in the 59th minute, Son was introduced to the game in place of Kulusevski and reminded everyone of his quality by scoring an impressive hat-trick to put the game out of reach for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Hargreaves believes it was the wrong decision to drop the 30-year-old from the starting eleven and claimed that the forward will remember the decision.

The ex-England international also paid tribute to Son’s humbleness, insisting that it was clear to see how highly he is regarded by his team-mates after he scored his first goal.

Hargreaves told Optus Sport: “He’s probably the most humble… he’s a superstar really. He is probably one of the most likable guys in the whole league, just the way he smiles, the way he plays, everyone who meets him and knows him loves him.

“The way his teammates and the crowd celebrated with him when he scored the first one just shows how much he means to Tottenham but also to the whole league. Everybody loves him. I think he is just one of those guys.

“That is why I was saying don’t drop him; you wouldn’t want to lose a guy like this. Maybe he could go somewhere else and every team in the world would want him. Of course you could rest him, but these boys don’t forget these moments sometimes. I know right now everything feels great, but Son will remember this at some point later down the line. That’s just how these guys are wired.”

Son has been under pressure in recent weeks, but arguably, the most pressure he has been under is from his own high expectations. Hopefully, he can return following the international break high on confidence ahead of the pivotal north London derby at the Emirates on October 1st.
