Willian opens up on relationship with ‘big friend’ Mourinho amidst Spurs links

It was the Jose Mourinho who first brought Willian to the Premier League with Chelsea and the Brazillian arguably had his best years under the Special One.

However, Willian could be set to depart from Chelsea at the end of this season as his contract is due to run down. The North Londoners have subsequently been installed as favourites to sign Willian on a free in the summer (Mundo Deportivo).

However, reports indicate that Spurs will face competition for the winger’s signature, with the likes of Liverpool (Sport via Sport Witness), and Arsenal (ESPN Brazil journalist Jorge Nicola) also ready to offer him a deal.

Willian has now opened up on the special relationship he shares with Mourinho but insisted that he has still not made a decision over his future as of yet. Having said that, the winger certainly didn’t rule out the prospect of joining Spurs.

Speaking to Bolivia Talk Show (as relayed by Evening Standard), Willian said: “Nothing arrived from Mourinho but we do have a good relationship, he’s a big friend of mine.

“We speak to each other sometimes but when it comes to that (speaking about transfers) he respects me a lot. I like London and my family likes it too but that’s a question I don’t know how to answer.

“I don’t know which club I’m going to or if I’m staying here at Chelsea or if I’m leaving to another London club or if I’m leaving England, that’s something I don’t know.”

Reading between the lines, it does sound like he would prefer to stay in London rather than move elsewhere. I’m also sceptical about his claim that Jose hasn’t discussed the possibility of joining him at Spurs. He is certainly going to have a lot of options to choose from this summer if Chelsea don’t offer him a new deal but being in London and having Mourinho might give us the upper hand.
