‘Win-win’ – Postecoglou comments on Heung-min Son’s Asian Cup progress

Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son takes on Australia in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup today, and his club manager, Ange Postecoglou naturally has some interest in the tie given his Australian roots.

After Heung-min Son‘s prolific start to the campaign, it’s safe to say Spurs fans were sad to see their skipper head off on international duty at the start of January. But, with his country calling and the chance of Asian Cup glory on the line, the South Korean star had to go, of course.

So far, South Korea have made it out of the group stages, and overcame Saudi Arabia in the last 16, but it took an injury time equaliser and a penalty shootout to help them scrape through that one.

Next up, Son faces Australia in the quarter-finals today at 3:30pm GMT, with a place in the last four at stake.

Sonny deserves to lift the Asian Cup

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has a great deal of experience in the Asian Cup, having guided the Socceroos to the title back in 2015. Now, he has a foot in each camp for today’s game, but he has insisted he doesn’t mind who wins.

Speaking on the club’s official Twitter account, Postecoglou said: “It’s kind of a win-win for me. Obviously I’m Australian and I’d love for them to go through, and then we’d get Sonny back.

“But part of me would love Sonny to win an Asian Cup, because I know what it would mean to him, I know what it would mean to his country, they put great stock in that competition. For Sonny, and everything he’s done for the game and his country—as disappointed as I’d be about Australia—I would love for Sonny to go all the way.”

Obviously we all want Sonny back as soon as possible, but at this point, I would rather him stay and get that trophy. We’ve coped without him this far, and he would be so happy to win it that it would just make it all worth it.
